If you have been dreaming of a bigger home but didn’t think you could afford it, it may be time to look in your garage.  What do you actually use your garage for? Most people don’t realise the potential of their garage and instead this valuable space gets used to store all sorts of rubbish you no longer have any use for.

Your garage is the perfect space in which to expand your home. It usually sits to the side or in front or the back of your house, which lends itself to an easy way of joining it to an existing room. The other bonus is that because the garage needs to be large enough to accommodate a car it is usually a generous size for a room, especially in the case of double garages.

Depending on your needs or your family, there are plenty of different ways in which you can convert your garage. Some people choose to convert because they have an elderly parent they want to have live with them, or their teenager is all grown up and needs some space of his own. A garage can make a great living room or den while many work-from-home professionals see in their garage the perfect office space.

Before your conversion there are some steps that need to be followed. You may need to apply for permission to convert especially if it is a standalone garage.  Design your new living space to fit in with the overall look of your house and make a list of all the extras you will need to add to the current structure of your garage in order to make it liveable such as insulation in the roof or new flooring.  Once you have all your plans and ideas you can start sourcing a building contractor and tallying up the cost of your new look home.

Finally, there are only two more things to think about – where are you going to park your car and what do you plan to do with all the junk that has been collecting in the garage all these years?
