The functions of the satellite dish and the standard Yagi TV aerials are basically the same, but whereas TV aerials pick up terrestrial TV such as BBC1 and BBC2 satellite antennas collect digital signals from satellites circulating in space. This means that you can get different a range of television programmes if you have a satellite dish. These are generally on subscription, such as Sky Sport and Sky Movies. The dish is used to collect the signals from a specific broadcast source and transmits it to your television. It will depend on your viewing requirements and whether you are an avid TV watcher as to how much you want to spend on installing TV reception equipment. Satellite telly is digital so will give you a clearer picture, but you can also get digital television through your standard TV aerial. Satellite dishes are more expensive than a standard TV aerial, but you will be able to receive more channels and have more flexibility over what you watch and when if you have satellite TV. By having a satellite receiving system, it does not preclude you from having a standard TV aerial – you can of course have both. The management and marketing of Freeview is carried out by DTV Services Limited under an agreement between the BBC, ITV, Channel 4, BskyB and Arqiva. You can receive 50 channels using Freeview. Freesat is also backed by the BBC and received through a satellite dish, providing 150 channels giving you a wider range of programmes at a lower cost. There is no monthly fee to pay for either of the services, but if you install a satellite dish with a subscription service, the cost of your viewing will of course increase.
The satellite dish is just another type of aerial providing different output in the form of programmes which may or may not be free, depending on the supplier. A standard TV aerial cannot receive the same signals as a satellite dish, which is more focused on specific signals and frequencies, receiving programmes which are not available through the TV aerial. Analogue systems are being phased out in 2012, so if you are still operating on an analogue aerial you will need to change to digital by installing Freeview, a set top box or a satellite dish. It may be the ideal time for you to decide to do some research and decide what you want to watch on TV.
