We carry them around with us everywhere we go but only really think about them when they are lost or we need to replace them. Keys open, and lock, many of the doors in our lives and we would be fairly lost without them. It makes sense then to have a good locksmith on call.

If you think about it, your locksmith is actually your key to a secure home or office, whether you are building from scratch, installing new locks or adding in extra security features.

When looking for locksmiths there are a few things you will need to keep in mind to ensure they are the right fit for the job.

First, you absolutely have to be able to trust them. There is no point in having extra security doors put in or locks changed for safety reasons if you are uncertain about your smith.

Some general guidelines to see whether your locksmiths are trustworthy are to think about how you found them, ask for references and check to see they have all the right qualifications and licences. A locksmith company listed in the telephone book has more authenticity than those who have simply run up a few flyers and dropped them in your post box.  Your best bet is to ask a local contracting company for recommendations.

For those of you have locked yourself out of the house over a weekend or on a holiday, you will know the importance of having an emergency locksmith at hand or one that is on call 24 hours a day.

A professional locksmith or lock company should be able to advise you on the best kind of locks to use and what latest technologies are available. Once your locksmith has done the job though, it is up to you to remember to keep duplicate keys in a safe place and not to leave any keys outside your home in obvious locations. There is only so much locksmiths can control!
